🍽️ It's nothing but tasty, tasty bites up in here• Sausage in pasta – an all-time ingredient
• Curry pan – a Japanese snack that seems to be bread filled with curry, coated in panko bread crumbs, and deep fried. The one I ate had cheese inside too. Drool-worthy.
• Ace Pizza. Light, crisp, great toppings. Get both the crack sauce and the fermented hot sauce.
• Bonus drink: Vermouth. Sweet vermouths. Red or white. Slap it on ice, pop in an olive, and pretend you're in Spain.

🍿 Mars Express (2023)
A great French animated sci-fi film that I had no idea about until a chance newsletter dropped into my inbox. Released at Cannes 2023, it's a future-set neo noir where a Mars PI and her robot partner investigate a murder. Superb animation and tantalising world building.

🧀 Cachapa con todo @ Papelón
Shredded beef, cheese, black beans, bananas (at least that's what the sign said, but maybe it's plantain?), avocado, a couple of sauces. Stupidly moreish. I devoured that thing.

🍫 'Japp' flavour Melkesjokolade by Freia
Absolute god-tier chocolate bar. Haven't had one in years, but was recently gifted a couple of other flavours of this chocolate bar and they were still incred.

🥤 Two drinks• Hōjicha lattes (who said green tea with milk was sacrilege...)
• Botivo non-alcoholic aperitivo (you really gotta love vinegar, but boy if you do...)

🇻🇪 A delightful set of bites at Arepa & CoI won't lie, while I didn't dislike the previous meal I had at Arepa & Co, my recall was that it didn't make my heart sing. So with mild reluctance, I went back, but was pleasantly surprised that it was START TO FINISH BANGERS:• Tostón avocado – A little corn fritter base topped with creamy smashed avo, lovely acidic pico, and a drizz of spicy mayo.
• Tequeños – This food seems purpose-made for children's parties, and I don't mean that as an insult. Cheese wrapped in dough, cooked, and ready to dip!
• Buñuelos – I believe these dough balls were feta-filled, but they definitely came on an amazing base of whipped feta, with a drizzle of sugar cane syrup on top for the sweet-salty-tangy-creamy combo.
• Cachapa with beef, black beans, and cheese. I'm a little scared to say it, but I think I enjoyed this more than arepas!
• A very tidy paloma. I love grapefruit. I enjoy tequila in mixed drinks. But a lot of places seem to knock out oddly unsatisfying palomas. Not the case here.Check it out!

Absolutely game-changing appliance. Wild that they feel like some kind of luxury compared to a washing machine, but it's the same concept.

I rarely see posts of any value on social media, but this one from Monocle magazine struck a chord. 100% agree.

🍩 Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts
They're unpretentious, and they're great. Doughnuts don't need to be hipster to be quality. (I'll also shout out a bonus here: the five-packs of jam doughnuts that supermarkets' in-house bakeries do.)

☕️ Suldery coffee from Hermanos
Had a cup of this beauty this morning. Definitely worth the drizzly jaunt it required. Although my palate isn't refined enough to catch the individual tasting notes, I can say this is one hell of a fruity sip. Brits, order here or swing in-store to get one brewed right.

📺 The Day of the Jackal (2024)
There's such a punchy start to this TV series remake of the 1973 film remake of this 1971 novel, and it continues to grip episode-by-episode. In a world of complete slopflix, this was an unfortunately-unordinary shock to the senses.

🌶️ Sweet chilli rice crackers
Outrageously addictive snack to keep at home. Punches way above its weight.

🫖 Rooibos chai
All the fun of spice; none of the terror of caffeine. (Also, drink your pot of tea from an espresso cup. It's actually the best way.)

Sitting at home on a rainy spring afternoon, drinking Moka pot coffee with an accompaniment of ice cold sparkling water (the harsher the better), nibbling on homemade baklava.

🍽️ Some Dalston bites and sips• Silk Stockings – Margaritas and tacos• Popeyes – Actually decent fast food fried chicken• Mersin Tantuni – Acclaimed purveyor of the formally-£3-now-£4.50 lamb mini wrap• Voodoo Ray's – Far from great slice pizza, but you don't get a lot of options in London, and they've finally revamped the menu• Three Sheets – Unbelievably good neighbourhood cocktail bar

🧦 Some clothing picks• Baseball caps – 47 and New Era have solid options for big domes. (While I love a barely-there dad cap, the slightest of London breezes will yank it straight off my head.) Ideal choices are obscure merch pieces and, of course, sports teams.• Beater watches – I don't go for a fancy watch. Sure, I've admired a classic submariner before, but timepieces of that ilk feel like their value comes from the price point vastly more so than the craft that produced it. I'll take a Casio, please. Silver bracelet. Digital display. (I don't like having to solve a puzzle to learn the time.)• White tees – Heavy, 100% cotton, please. I don't want the toilet paper adjacent high street pieces that show nips in 4K. Although I will admit, as a man on a mission for a wardrobe's worth of these tees, I did have price point heavily in mind. Turns out the AS Colour heavy tee does the absolute trick. Felt a smidge long in the body in the shop but cotton's aptitude to shrink in agua meant that post-wash they've ended up perfect for my tastes. Took a looooooooooooong time to land on this one after Uniqlo then John Lewis each betrayed me with their garm integrity. Only thing left wanting for is a pocket.• Flowy jackets – A little boxy, a little cropped. The fit du jour, if you will. Although, I say cropped very carefully; not this kind of outrageous trend crop but just a little cropped relative to menswear designers' inclination to give trenchcoat length to even the most basic of t-shirts, for example. Light-ish cotton is the go here. As is plenty of pockets. (Honestly, the best thing here is just a vintage French chore coat. Cobalt blue, s’il vous plaît.)• Loose trousers – Again, not trend loose. Just something classic, straight legged, or maybe with a gentle taper. Allow air on leg. I'm test-running the Gramicci gadget pant for this right now.• Comfy runners – I've yet to find the right piece here but I'm expecting Asics or Nike to nail it. I don't go for particularly hypey sneakers; I'm vastly too uncool for that. That means special edition New Balances, Salomons, etc are all out for moi.

🎙️ Podcasts I'm rating• Close All Tabs – A loosely-related spiritual second cousin to Reply All's 'show about the internet'.• Hyperfixed – Alex Goldman is back, baby! Solving problems, big and small. (Mostly small.)• Normal Gossip – I was late to this one, but Kelsey McKinney is a great storyteller, bringing you absolutely bonkers gossip from regular folks.• Scamfluencers – Scaachi and Sarah bring excellent cohost energy to the mic while running through well-told stories about scammers.• Segments – All the absurdity of Jake and Amir, with one or more new 'segments' brought into the show each episode.• Triple Click – I like video games, but I don't get as much joy playing them anymore. Listening to passionate folks talk about them is a nice alternative.

🧵 Corduroy
What a material. Its workwear roots means you can beat it up without worry, and its more modern connection to academia – while a bit stuffy – means it's ended up being considered more formal than denim, letting you get away with it in a broader array of settings.🥦 Sausage and broccoli

I'm sure I've said this before, but as a carless city-dweller where access to large grocery stores isn't easy and carrying a lot home is difficult, an online order delivered to your door is a gamechanger.05 Jan 24 📅 Having a day off at home between getting back from holiday and going back to work. Essential.04 Jan 25 🍿 My Old Ass. A quirky, heartwarming coming-of-age film set in a stunning Canadian landscape.03 Jan 25 🥘 Sharing a fideuà for lunch. Paella vibes with seafood and short noodles instead of rice.02 Jan 25 🍸 La Santa Fe, València. A fab cocktail bar with that long, dark, narrow old New Yorky vibe.01 Jan 25 🍿 Conclave. A staple of the colder months. Bonus points when it's free.
